Explorer Scouting was launched across the UK as part of The Scout Associations Programme Review. It was a totally new section taking the older members of the Scouts and younger members of the Venture Scouts to form what is now the Explorer Scouts. All this took place during 2002. The unit in the former district of Kilmarnock & Loudoun was one of the first units to be formed in Scotland and the first in Ayrshire. The first meetings were held on the 2nd September 2002 simultaneously in the 37th Ayrshire (Henderson) & 20th Ayrshire (Stewarton) halls, a further meeting was held on the 3rd September in the 92nd Ayrshire (Galston) hall.
All members that fell into the age range within the district were invited to come
to any of these nights as well as a promotional weekend that had been organised for
the weekend of the 27-
From this start a unit of 15 blossomed over the years, this number has increased and the unit currently has 33 members (including 7 young leaders).
In September 2005 Kilmarnock & Loudoun and Kylesmuir districts joined to become Ayrshire East Scout District. Other districts in Ayrshire were going through the same process. This means that the district now covers over 490 square miles, of which 97% is rural.
On 1st April 2008 the district became one of the 5 new districts in the South West Scotland Region, replacing the areas of Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire & Galloway
